Wood Destroying Insect Inspection Information

Wood Destroying Insect Inspection Information

Ohio regulation requires that inspections for wood-destroying insects in a property involved in a real estate inspection be performed by a licensed inspector. The Wood-Destroying Insect Inspection license is part of Ohio Pesticide Law and therefore requires the inspectors to obtain an Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator License. Additionally, the inspector is required to attend a five-hour mandatory training before obtaining their license.

I do not currently have an Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator License

Since you don't have a license you need to complete several processes. It doesn't matter which process is done first; you just need to have both completed before your license will be issued:

Step 1: Obtain an Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator License

You'll need to obtain an Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator license with Category 12 (Wood-Destroying Insect (WDI) Inspections). Click here for an application form. The cost of the license is $35 annually. In addition to applying for the license, you will be required to take two exams: Core and Category 12 (WDI Inspections). Core is the general exam about laws, regulations, and safety. The category 12 (WDI Inspections) exam focuses on inspections. The exam study materials will be sent to you after your application has been received. You can take the exams the day of the training class or at another exam location. Click here for exam locations and dates.

Step 2: Complete mandatory training for Wood-Destroying Insect Inspections

A mandatory training is required for Wood-Destroying Insect inspections (Category 12). This training is held twice a year (in the spring and fall) at the Ohio Department of Agriculture in Reynoldsburg. Click here for the upcoming training. The cost of the training is $90.

Step 3: Obtain a business license if you own your business

If you own your business, you must obtain a Pesticide Business License and show proof of insurance for errors and omission. Click here for the business license application.

I already have an Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator License

You already have a license and just need to add Category 12 (Wood-Destroying Insect Inspection) to your license. You'll need to take the exam for Category 12 and also follow these two steps:

Step 1: Complete mandatory training for Wood-Destroying Insect Inspections

A mandatory training is required for Wood-Destroying Insect inspections (Category 12). This training is held twice a year (in the spring and fall) at the Ohio Department of Agriculture in Reynoldsburg. Click here for the upcoming training. The cost of the training is $90.

Step 2: Add errors and ommisions to your insurance

If you have your own business, you already have an Ohio Pesticide Business License. With the WDI license, you will need to add liability insurance for errors and omissions to your insurance. The complete amounts are listed on the Pesticide Business License Application form.
