Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
Private Pesticide Applicators

Who is a private applicator?

This is a person who produces an agricultural commodity on property he owns or rents or on his employer's property and uses a restricted use pesticide. A private applicator must pass the written certification exams and pay a $30.00 fee for the 3 year certification.

Do I need to be a private applicator if I do not use restricted use pesticides?

No, at this time you would only need the license if restricted use pesticides are used.

Where can I get training before I take an exam?

You are not required to attend an educational program before taking an exam. However, many county offices offer a training session for new private applicators. For information contact your county OSU Extension office.

What is required to apply pesticides to another's property for hire?

You would need a commercial pesticide applicator license if you are paid to apply pesticides to someone else's property. For information on becoming a licensed commercial applicator, click here.
