DATES SET FOR EDUCATOR INSERVICE
The dates have been set for the Pesticide Applicator Training Educator Inservice. The inservice will be December 3 and 4, 2008, and held at the Ohio 4-H Center on OSU Campus in Columbus. The schedule and registration information will be posted at http://pested.osu.edu in mid-October. If you have suggestions for the program, please contact Joanne Kick-Raack or Cindy Folck or one of the following planning committee members: Jim Lopshire, Jonah Johnson, John Hixson, Tim Malinich and Mark Mechling.
FARM SCIENCE REVIEW
The Pesticide Education Program will have application equipment demonstrations in the rinse pad area at Farm Science Review. The demonstration sprayer boom will feature various spray nozzle combinations with differing spray pressure. Growers can experiment with different pressures and see drift potential with the different nozzles. The rinse pad is located in exhibit space 1005 on Beef Street.
The program will also have a Worker Protection Standard (WPS)display in the Small Farm Tent. After the Farm Science Review, the display will be available to counties to use at field days and other meetings. Stop by and see the display. SOIL FUMIGATION SAFETY MEASURES
EPA is accepting comments for new safety measures that will be required for fumigant users. The measures would appear on fumigant product labels in the market place around 2010. The requirements are designed to reduce fumigant exposures for pesticide handlers, workers and people who may be near the treated areas. The five areas that will be addressed are:
Buffer Zones
Posting Buffer Zones
Fumigant Management Plans
Emergency Preparedness and Response
Worker Protection Measures

INSECT RESISTANCE CAUSES SUSPENSION OF PESTICIDE SALES
Dow AgroSciences is voluntarily suspending the sale and use of multiple spinosyn insecticides in two Florida counties. Western flower thrips in the area have developed resistance to the active ingredient spinosad. The suspension of all spoinosyn products in the two counties is through a Section 24(c) Special Local Needs Label. The products are used in nursery and greenhouse, lawn care, landscape, golf course and fruit and vegetable markets.
The suspension is to preserve the viability of the spinosyn pesticides. Using the same pesticide class continuously over an extended period of time without proper rotation with other chemistries can lead to resistance development. ORGANIC GINGER FOUND TO HAVE PESTICIDE RESIDUE
Whole Foods Market and Frontier Natural Products Co-op issued recalls for ginger-based products after an investigative story by a Washington D.C. television station revealed traces of the insecticide aldicarb on their ginger products.
Aldicarb is not approved for use on ginger and is not allowed under USDA organic regulations. The ginger was grown in China and has brought into question the certifying process for Chinese organic farms. The USDA National Organic Program accredits certifying agents as third-party certifiers who inspect farms and food handling operations to certify USDA standards are met. As a result of the television reports, USDA will be publishing the results of audits of accredited certifying agents. GOLFER EXPOSURE TO PESTICIDES ON GOLF COURSE
A recent study by researchers at University of Massachusetts looked at exposure of golfers after applications of chlorpyrifos and carbaryl on turfgrass. The testing looked at air concentrations and possible respiratory and dermal exposure. After golfing several rounds, the golfers’ clothing and urine were also analyzed. The study concluded the estimated exposure was below current U.S. EPA acute reference dose values. REPORT ON INSECT RESISTANCE TO BT CROPS
A group of researchers from the University of Arizona and Iowa State University looked at the first decade of Bt crops used in the United States, Australia, China and Spain. They conclude that the first generation of Bt crops had sustained efficacy against nearly all targeted pests and exceeded the expectations of many scientists. INSECTICIDES
Disulfoton – All uses on barley and wheat have been requested to be voluntarily terminated by the manufacturer. Use of this selective, system, organophosphate insecticide has also been requested to be terminated on potatoes and the granular formulation on broccoli and commercial ornamentals. MISC.
DuPont has received U.S. regulatory approval of Optimum GAT trait in soybeans. The trait includes the ability to incorporate complementary ALS herbicides into a glyphosate program. The trait will be available in soybean varieties in 2011.
