DATABASE FOR BIOPESTICIDES AND ORGANICS
A searchable database for biopesticides is available at http://www.ir4.rutgers.edu/Biopesticides/LabelDatabase/index.cfm Biopesticides are natural products or organisms that are present in conventional products or organics. Growers can search the website by crop, pest and state. The information can also be sorted by organics.
The database was created by the Interregional Research Project No. 4 (IR-4) with funding from U.S. EPA. (Source: Chemically Speaking, University of Florida Extension, June, 2007)
CHANGES FOR PESTICIDE AND FERTILIZER SECTION AT ODA
Matt Beal was named the head of the Pesticide and Fertilizer Section at the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), a position formerly held by Bill Pound. Pound has left ODA in August to pursue other opportunities. Thanks to Bill for his role in Ohio agriculture. We forward to working with Matt in his new position.
JOHN DEERE ACQUIRES LESCO
Deere & Co. purchased Lesco, Inc. a Cleveland-based supplier of fertilizer, seed and chemicals for lawn and golf course maintenance. The sale became official in May after receiving regulatory and shareholder approval.
Lesco, with 332 locations, will become part of John Deere Landscapes. The move is also considered to strengthen the John Deere Golf & Turf One Source, according to the company. Lesco’s golf and turf products will be available through John Deere One Source distributors and the John Deere Landscapes gold branches which will include former Lesco service centers.

FARMS SCIENCE REVIEW
Air-assisted spray technology and an interactive boom sprayer will be highlights at the Pesticide Application Technology display at the Farm Science Review. Applicators coming to the booth will be able to see differences in nozzle technology during continual demonstrations. Research updates on sprayer and application technology will also be featured. The booth is located at 1005 Beef Street, at the west end of the exhibit area. For more information about Farm Science Review, visit http://fsr.osu.edu
BALD EAGLE IS DELISTED
The bald eagle will be removed from the list of threatened and endangered species. The eagle has recovered from a low in 1963 of 417 nesting pairs to over 9,789 pairs today. The bald eagle will continue to be protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and Migratory Bird Treaty Act. More information about the delisting is available at: http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/BaldEagle.htm
EXPANSION OF THE CLEAN WATER ACT
Legislation has been introduced to expand the definition of “waters of the United States” under the Clean Water Act. Currently the act has been interpreted to cover navigable waters. The proposed expansion would include ditches and low-lying field areas.
The expansion is opposed by CropLife America who has testified that the expansion of the definition would further confuse the debate about federal pollution permit requirements. The testimony is available at: http://www.croplifeamerica.org/design_06/viewer.asp?pageid=212

PESTICIDE CROP WATCH
INSECTICIDES
Benzoic Acid – EPA has issued the re-registration eligibility for benzyl benzoate used to control dust mites in carpets, mattresses, upholstery and on furniture as well as control of mites on dogs. EPA has determined that products containing this active ingredient are eligible for re-registration.
Diazinon – EPA has cancelled Diazinon 14G, a product containing diazinon. This was the last diazinon granular formulation registered for use in the country.
MISC.
Methyl bromide – EPA has announced the proposed allocations of methyl bromide for 2008. Methyl bromide is considered to be harmful to the ozone and has been available only for critical use exemptions. The proposal for this year’s uses is available at: http://www.epa.gov/ozone/mbr . A comment period is open until the end of September. Industry representatives are concerned that the existing stocks of methyl bromide continue to shrink.
