Lawn Notification and Posting Requirements*

Residential Lawns
Commercial Lawns
Public Lawns


Residential Lawns

Property of four dwelling units or less

  1. Leave in writing with the person on the property:
    • Brand or common name of pesticides applied.
    • Chemical type (fungicide, herbicide, insecticide, etc.).
    • Any special instructions on the label applicable to the customer.
    • Applicator's company name and telephone number.
    • Date and time of application.
    • Any other information required by the label
    • Must provide customer with written statement that says, "Lawn posting signs must remain in place for 24 hours following lawn application."
  2. Attempt to notify, at least one business day prior to application, any occupant of an abutting residence who requested, in writ ing, to be notified of lawn-pesticide application. Information listed in 1 above must be provided if requested. These records must be kept for 3 years. Before an individual's name can be deleted, they must be notified and offered the opportunity to again request notification.
  3. Post one or more signs at conspicuous points to notify passers-by of lawn-pesticide application for 24 hours. The sign must be at least 5 inches by 4 inches and waterproof for 24 hours. The sign should be in plain sight and not obscured by any object. When posted, the bottom edge of the sign must be at least 14 inches from the ground. The sign shall be in the following form (not actual size - should be at leat 5" x 4"):

Commercial Lawns

Public or private turfgrass, cultivated for aesthetic purposes

  1. Leave in writing with the person responsible for administration of the property:
    • Brand or common name of pesticides applied.
    • Chemical type (fungicide, herbicide, insecticide, etc.).
    • Any special instructions on the label applicable to the customer.
    • Applicator's company name and telephone number.
    • Date and time of application.
    • Any other information required by the Department of Agriculture
  2. Post one or more signs at conspicuous points including common access points to notify passers-by of lawn-pesticide application for 24 hours. The sign shall be in the form as shown above.

Public Lawns

Public or private turfgrass, cultivated for recreational purposes

  1. Leave in writing with the person on the property:
    • Brand or common name of pesticides applied.
    • Chemical type (fungicide, herbicide, insecticide, etc.).
    • Any special instructions on the label applicable to the customer.
    • Applicator's company name and telephone number.
    • Date and time of application.
    • Any other information required by the Department of Agriculture
  2. Post one or more signs at conspicuous points to notify passers-by of lawn-pesticide application for 24 hours. The sign shall be in the form as shown above.
  3. Instead of a 24-hour lawn posting, a permanent sign may be placed at common access points. The sign must be at least 8 inches by 10 inches and reads: "Periodic application of lawn pesticides - inquire at [give location to obtain.]"
  4. The designated location listed on the sign for pesticide information must be accessible to the public during normal business hours.
